			 <p>I have recently seen in the NCarolina Standard a graphic sketch of
				the late commencement at 
				<name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Chapel Hill</name>. If it was drawn "in the life" (as I
				assume it was) then, as one of the alumni of that institution, and as a native
				of the good old north state ( 
				<name key="pn0000589" reg="God" type="person">God</name> bless her), I
				feel proud of her as my 
				<name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization" rend="yes">alma mater</name>; and congratulate the state
				&amp; due statesmen as well as the 
				<name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization" rend="yes">trustees</name> and finally of this institution for its elevated
				position among the literary institutions of 
				<name key="name0001138" reg="Union" type="organization">the
				  Union</name>. You no doubt well remember that I was a member of the Senior
				Class, and the only tutor of 
				<name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">the University</name>, at the commencement of the year
				1818. That <hi rend="underscore">great and good man the late 
				<name reg="Caldwell, Joseph " key="pn0000268" type="person" rend="yes">D<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Caldwell</name></hi>
				<gap reason="[unrecovered]"/> and myself at that time the only members of the
				Faculty then in charge of it. 
				<name key="pn0000783" reg="Hooper, William (b. 1792) " type="person" rend="yes">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Hooper</name>, the professor of the ancient
				languages, was absent in a town to the south and you, who had recently been
				appointed professor of mathematics, did not arrive till some weeks after the
				commencement of the session; when all had arrived, and it was in full
				operation, our number consisted only of four — 
				<name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph " type="person" rend="yes">D<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Caldwell</name>, yourself, 
				<name key="pn0000783" reg="Hooper, William (b. 1792) " type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Hooper</name>, and myself, with ninety two
				students, including myself, who was both student &amp; tutor. In looking over
				some of my old papers, I have found a catalogue containing all the names who
				were then students with a memorandum of honors attached to the graduating
				class. I enclose a copy, which gives<pb id="unc07-15-p02" n="2"/>a contrast of
				the institution <hi rend="underscore">then</hi> and <hi rend="underscore">now</hi>. I have made a note against the names of those known
				to be dead. There are doubtless others, who have gone hence to be seen no more
				forever; of whose deaths I have not been apprised. Of the whole number, four
				only are residents of this state —

				  Anderson</name>, 
				<name type="person" reg="Croom, Bryan S." key="pn0003042" rend="yes">Bryan Croom</name>, 
				<name key="pn0001357" reg="Phillips, Charles " type="person" rend="yes">D<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Philips</name>, and myself. I know of no
				earthly pleasure which would afford me more heartfelt satisfaction than a short
				stay at that village; where I could again refresh my memory with a review of
				the places and things that still remain as mementos of days that are past; when
				the future was looked to with hopes, never to be realized.</p> 
			 <p>I would like to look into the room occupied by 
				<name key="pn0001375" reg="Polk, James Knox " type="person" rend="yes">President Polk</name> and myself; where we spent many pleasant hours
				in reading together the Latin &amp; Greek authors; and in demonstrating the
				proportions in Conic Sectors; and being the first class that ever studied that
				branch of mathematics. Our room was in the S<hi rend="sup">o</hi> West corner
				of the 3<hi rend="sup">rd </hi>story of what was then called the new college. I
				would like too to see the libraries, and to take a stroll through the village,
				beginning at 
				<name reg="Nunn, Hugh " type="person" key="pn0001293" rend="yes">Nunn's</name> and going eastwardly down the Main Street, first by 
				<name key="pn0001204" reg="Mitchell, Sarah (1) " type="person" rend="yes">Mrs. Mitchell's</name> on the right; 
				<name type="person" key="pn0003225" reg="Trice, George" rend="yes">Trice's</name> store on the left; then 
				<name reg="Henderson, Pleasant" type="person" key="pn0000720" rend="yes">Major Henderson</name>, then 
				<name key="pn0000753" reg="Hogg, James (of Chapel Hill) " type="person" rend="yes">James Hogg's</name> immediately opposite; then the
				tavern occupied by 
				<name key="pn0000741" reg="Hilliard, Ann &quot;Nancy&quot; Segur " type="person" rend="yes">Hilliard</name>; then 
				<name type="person" key="pn0003221" reg="Taylor, Thomas H." rend="yes">Tom Taylor's</name> store then, on the left, the 
				<name key="pn0003176" reg="Pitt, Edmund R." type="person" rend="yes">Edmund Pitt's</name> dwelling, then 
				<name key="pn0003221" reg="Taylor, Thomas H." type="person">Tom
				  Taylor's</name>, <pb id="unc07-15-p03" n="3"/>then (East of the 
				<name key="name0000946" reg="Raleigh Road" type="place">Raleigh
				  road</name>) 
				<name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person">D<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Caldwell's</name> residence, then, 
				<name key="pn0000783" reg="Hooper, William (b. 1792) " type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Hooper's</name>; immediately opposite to
				the latter was 
				<name type="person" key="pn0003184" reg="Puckett, Elizabeth" rend="yes">Mrs. Puckett's</name>. This was <hi rend="underscore">then</hi> the
				principal street. South from Mrs. 
				<name key="pn0003379" type="person" reg="Nunn, Elizabeth &quot;Betsy&quot;">Nunn's</name>, was 
				<name key="pn0000091" reg="Barbee, William" type="person" rend="yes">W<hi rend="sup">m</hi> Barbee's</name>, then 
				<name reg="Caldwell, Joseph" key="pn0000268" type="person">the
				  President's</name> house, occupied by yourself. Then S<hi rend="sup">o</hi>
				West was 
				<name type="place" reg="Mrs. Pannell's (boardinghouse)" key="name0003039" rend="yes">Pannell's</name> and 
				<name reg="Watson, William" key="pn0001737" type="person" rend="yes">Watson's</name>. These I believe were at that time the houses
				composing the village; with two college buildings; and 
				<name reg="Person Hall" type="place" key="name0000862">Person Hall,
				  Chapel.</name> </p> 
			 <p>I would like too to visit the graveyard, then containing some half
				dozen graves; and the Rock Spring, and the 
			 	<name key="name0000368" reg="Twin Sisters" type="place" rend="yes">Twin Sisters</name>, and the bath. I would like too to visit
				the Old Poplar, in the right of the path leading from the 
				<name reg="Person Hall" type="place" key="name0000862">Chapel</name>
				to 
				<name key="pn0000268" reg="Caldwell, Joseph" type="person">D<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Caldwell's</name>. Is it still living? But most of all, I
				would like to shake the hand of yourself with whom while there, I spent so many
				hours of happiness. I see 
				<name reg="Swain, David Lowry " type="person" key="pn0001638">Gov
				  Swain</name> is still at the head of the institution. Much of its present
				reputation is owing no doubt to his great abilities and untiring energy; to say
				nothing of the high reputation of his associates.</p> 
			 <p>The last vote I ever gave, as a member of the 
				<name reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization" key="name0000107">board of trustees</name>,<hi rend="underscore"> was for him as
				President. I have seen no cause to regret that vote</hi>; but much to approve
				it. My children (six in number) are all grown, <hi rend="underscore">but
				one</hi>. Four of whom reside presently in 
				<name reg="New York" key="name0000729" type="place">New York</name>;
				and two in 
				<name key="name0000378" reg="Florida" type="place">Florida</name>.
				They are making out pretty well. I live the life of a hermit, rarely see
				anybody; and am worn out with old age. Excuse this letter, it is intended to be
				entirely<pb id="unc07-15-p04" n="4"/>private. It is carelessly written. I would
				like once more to hear from you, before I go to the world of spirits.</p>
