                <p>The <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Ex. Com.</name> today adopted the following Resolutions.</p>
                <p>"The <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Ex. Com.</name> taking into consideration a
                    communication from the Pres. of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of                         North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> transmitting a copy of
                    the proceedings of the Faculty relative to the action of the Senior Class in the
                    election of a Chaplain to deliver the Valedictory Sermon at the next
                    Commencement. Resolved that while they earnestly deprecate any thing like
                    religious intolerance as in conflict alike with the principles of the
                    Constitution &amp; their own views, there are other important considerations
                    the force &amp; bearing of which upon the question at this time the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Executive Committee</name> could better understand
                    &amp; more justly appreciate than the Senior Class. The <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> is therefore of the opinion that the Pres. under the
                    circumstances in advising the class to consult the <name reg="Executive                         Committee, Board of Trustees" key="name0000352" type="organization">Committee</name> acted judiciously &amp; properly. </p>
                <p>The <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> are further of <pb id="unc08-11-p02" n="2"/>opinion that as the invitation to deliver the sermon has already been
                    transmitted it is not expedient to take any further action in the
                    premises."</p>
                <p>I apprehend the <hi rend="underscore">whole</hi> affair will blow over without
                    further embarrassment. If I were in your place, I would let the matter drop,
                    &amp; not give it any factitious importance by communicating this decision
                    to the class.</p>
                <p>In regard to the future, there is, I think, but one sentiment in the Committee
                    &amp; that is that henceforth no appointment of Chaplain, Marshals, nor Ball
                    Managers shall be valid without the assent of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of Trustees</name> or the
                        <name key="name0000352" type="organization" reg="Executive Committee, Board of                         Trustees">Ex. Com.</name> in writing. As the present mode of appointment has
                    been declared or approved by the <hi>
                        <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of
                            Trustees</name>
                    </hi> the Committee decline disturbing it. The annual meeting in June will be a
                    fit occasion to move in it. </p>
                <p>In regard to Building Improvements the <name reg="Executive Committee, Board of                         Trustees" key="name0000352" type="organization">Committee</name> have resolved
                    to <pb id="unc08-11-p03" n="3"/> engage the services of <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">Col. Gwyn</name>. His accomplishments as a draughtsman
                    &amp; general knowledge of labor &amp; materials &amp; skill in
                    making contracts qualify him preeminently for the business. He left home this
                    morning for <name key="name0000976" reg="Richmond, VA" type="place">Richmond</name>. <name key="pn0000180" reg="Bragg, Thomas" type="person">Gov.
                        Bragg</name> &amp; myself are a Sub Com. to see him on his return.</p>
                <p>I have, this moment, since writing the foregoing, recd. your letter of yesterday
                    from P. Office.</p>
                <p>I am truly glad that the <hi>bone</hi> is buried by the <name key="pn0000800" reg="Hughes, John Joseph" type="person">Bishop's</name> declension. </p>
                <p>The<hi rend="underscore"> Special Board</hi> of Visitors is required to be
                    selected out of the <hi rend="underscore">regular</hi> class. I give you their
                    names. Make your own selection &amp; let me know. The Com. will doubtless
                    ratify your nomination. For mercy's sake leave out the <hi rend="underscore">Secretary</hi>. <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">Nash</name> &amp;
                        <name key="pn0001462" reg="Ruffin, Thomas" type="person">Ruffin</name> do not
                    belong to the class but a swap may be allowable. So as to <name key="pn0000102" reg="Barringer, Daniel Moreau" type="person">Barringer</name>, <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">W. J. Alexander</name>, <name key="pn0000119" reg="Battle, William H." type="person">W. H. Battle</name>, <name key="x" type="person" reg="x">J. W.
