                    <p> I send you herewith a copy of minutes of <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive                             Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Ex. Com.</name> of
                        this day.</p>
                    <p>On the <hi rend="underscore">trial of</hi>
                        <hi rend="underscore">the Impeachment</hi>, after all the Communications
                        from the Faculty were read <name key="pn0000180" reg="Bragg, Thomas" type="person">Gov. Bragg</name> presented 4 papers of 30 mortal pages
                        from <name key="pn0000733" reg="Harrisse, Henry" type="person">"Sir
                                W<hi rend="sup">m</hi> Hamilton"</name> called his
                        "Postscript to Memorial N<hi rend="sup">o</hi> 1; Key &amp;
                        Appendix to Memorial N<hi rend="sup">o</hi>. 2 &amp; Postscript to his
                        Key &amp; Appendix." No one called for the reading of these
                        papers &amp; they were not read. <name key="pn0000180" reg="Bragg, Thomas" type="person">Gov B.</name> &amp; <name key="pn0000218" reg="Bryan,                             John Herritage" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Bryan</name> stated
                        that they had rec<hi rend="sup">d</hi> private letters from the Prosecutor
                        which were not exhibited. I have no doubt that other members (<name key="pn0001213" reg="Moore, Bartholomew F." type="person">Moore</name>
                        &amp; <name key="pn0001487" reg="Saunders, Romulus Mitchell" type="person">Saunders</name>) had also rec<hi rend="sup">d</hi> some, but they did
                        not say so.</p>
                    <p>I made the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Com<hi rend="sup">m</hi></name> a speech, me judice,
                        a rouser &amp; introduced 4 Resolutions.</p>
                    <p>1. That the case of <name key="pn000" reg="Whitaker, William" type="person">Whitaker</name> was, by law, exclusively within the cognizance
                        &amp; jurisdiction of the Faculty, that we had confidence in their
                        judg<hi rend="sup">t</hi> &amp; discretion &amp; declined expression of any opinion
                        on merits (in substance).</p>

                    <p>2. Condemning the interference of <name key="pn0000733" reg="Harrisse, Henry" type="person">Herrisse</name> in the appointment of Tutors &amp;
                        opposition to Pres<hi rend="sup">t</hi> &amp; affirming &amp;
                        approving Faculty's [Resolution] of 15 Aug<hi rend="sup">t</hi>. last
                        (following copy).</p>
                    <p>3. Approving of discipline &amp;c &amp; that there was nothing in
                            <name key="pn0000733" reg="Harrisse, Henry" type="person">"Sir
                                W<hi rend="sup">m's</hi>"</name> complaint.</p>
                    <p>4. Therefore that the further consideration of the subject be indefinitely
                        postponed.</p>
                    <p><name key="pn0001213" reg="Moore, Bartholomew F." type="person">Moore</name>
                        said we had not time to consider the subject, that he had to fix his papers
                        for his Circuit &amp;c. <name key="pn0001487" reg="Saunders, Romulus                             Mitchell" type="person">Saunders</name> also was "taken with a
                        leaving" to attend a Rail Road meeting. The <gap reason="[unrecovered]"/> 
				moved that the whole be ref.<hi rend="sup">d</hi> to a select Com<hi rend="sup">m</hi> consisting of <name key="pn0001213" reg="Moore,                             Bartholomew F." type="person">Moore</name>, <name key="pn0000218" reg="Bryan, John Herritage" type="person">Bryan</name>, &amp; myself
                        to make report &amp;c This motion was seconded by <name key="pn0000218" reg="Bryan, John Herritage" type="person">Bryan</name> &amp; carried.</p>
                    <p>Should this Committee <hi rend="underscore">never</hi>
                        <hi rend="underscore">report</hi> &amp; the subject remain on the table,
                        the necessary inference will be that the grave impeachments of the
                        Prosecutor have been regarded as senseless clamor &amp; unworthy of
                        notice. But more of all this anon.</p>
                    <p>After taking a sober second thought of this whole affair I am inclined to
                        believe that you are magnifying it too much, giving too much importance to
                        scandal. All <name key="pn0000733" reg="Harrisse, Henry" type="person">Sir
                                W<hi rend="sup">m</hi></name> wants is to provoke &amp;<pb id="unc08-22-p03" n="3"/>goad you all. His private griefs &amp;
                        malice will not be heeded by a single member of the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Board of Trustees</name>. I
                        will not repeat (with <name key="pn000" reg="Young, Edward" type="person">Young</name>) that it is:<q>
                            <lg type="verse">
                                <l>"Old Ocean into tempest wrought</l>
                                <l>To waft a feather or to drown a fly."</l>
                            </lg>
                        </q>But I will say (with one illustrious predecessor <name key="pn000" reg="Old                             Stoky" type="person">Old Stoky</name>) that it is firing a cannon at a
                        small cock sparrow.</p>
                    <p>As to <name key="pn0000708" reg="Hedrick, Benjamin Sherwood" type="person">Hedrick</name>, he is beheaded. I read your letter to the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Com<hi rend="sup">m</hi></name> on their power to
                        dismiss. But to no purpose. The "out side pressure" was
                        too great. Sundry letters had come up from <name key="name0000107" reg="Board                             of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name> (from <name key="pn000" reg="Steele, Colonel" type="person">Co<hi rend="sup">l</hi>
                        Steele</name> among others) a public meeting (I think in <name key="name000" reg="Murfreesboro, NC" type="place">Murfreesbor<hi rend="sup">o</hi></name>) &amp; the Southern press all demanding his instant
                        removal, the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of                             Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> determined to take the
                        responsibility. <name key="pn0001487" reg="Saunders, Romulus Mitchell" type="person">Saunders's</name> Reso<hi rend="sup">n</hi> was a long
                        &amp; violent one, mixed up with politics; we finally got it down to
                        what it is. Moreover it was stated that certain students who were here
                        during the fair declared that the danger of a College riot was imminent;
                        that they were only waiting to see what the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Ex.
                                Com<hi rend="sup">m</hi></name> would do &amp; if they passed it
                        over that violence &amp; bloodshed would ensue. I placed very little
                        confidence myself in this story.</p>
                    <p>Please notify <name key="pn0000708" reg="Hedrick, Benjamin Sherwood" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Hedrick</name> of the decision.<pb id="unc08-22-p04" n="4"/>Finding that the young McKimmons are here I
                        will send up by them the "Key &amp; Appendix &amp;
                        Postscript" as I could not afford to pay postage on it, &amp;
                        after you have amused yourself with it you can return it by a <hi rend="underscore">private opportunity</hi>.</p>
                    <p>It is my purpose, at present, to call by <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel                             Hill, NC" type="place">CHill</name> on my return from <name key="name0000178" reg="Chatham County, NC" type="place">Chatham
                        Count</name> . It will be a favorable time to pay off the balance of
                        salaries &amp;c. Should I do so I shall drive straight up to your House.
                        I can't stand <name key="pn000" reg="Guthrie" type="person">Guthrie's</name>
                        &amp; I know you will be glad to see me "any how" I
                        will let you know whether I go or not.</p>
                    <p><name key="pn000" reg="Amis, James S." type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi>
                        Amis</name> of <name key="name0000434" reg="Granville County, NC" type="place">Granville</name> has I think made a pretty plain case against the
                        Anthropophagos about <name key="pn000" reg="Fane, Jacob" type="person">Jacob
                            Fane</name>.</p>

                    <p>The <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> resumed the consideration of the
                        several memorials of <name key="pn0000733" reg="Harrisse, Henry" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Herrisse</name> heretofore laid on the
                        table.</p>
                    <p>Copies from the Faculty's Journal together with the answering &amp;
                        statements of the President &amp; several of the Professors as to the
                        charges contained in the said memorials were laid before the <name key="name0000352" reg="Executive Committee, Board of Trustees" type="organization">Committee</name> &amp; read: and <name key="pn0000180" reg="Bragg, Thomas" type="person">Gov. Bragg</name> also
                        presented other papers from <name key="pn0000733" reg="Harrisse, Henry" type="person">M<hi rend="sup">r</hi> Herrisse</name> called by him
                        "A Postscript to Memorial N<hi rend="sup">o</hi>. 1, Key &amp;
                        Appendix to Memorial N<hi rend="sup">o</hi>. 2, &amp; a Postscript to
                        Key &amp; Appendix."</p>
                    <p>On motion of Judge Saunders</p>
                    <p>Ordered that the whole subject be referred to a select Committee consisting
                        of Mess<hi rend="sup">r</hi>

                                                S. Hedrick</name> seems disposed to respect neither
                                            the opinion of the Faculty nor the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">Trustees</name> of the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name> but persists
                                            in retaining his distinction to the manifest injury of
                                            the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North                                                 Carolina" type="organization">University</name>:</p>
                                        <p>Resolved that for the causes set forth by this Committee
                                            on the 11<hi rend="sup">th</hi> inst., he the said <name key="pn0000708" reg="Hedrick, Benjamin Sherwood" type="person">B. S. Hedrick</name> be &amp; he
                                            is hereby dismissed as a Professor in the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization">University</name>; &amp; the
                                            Professorship which he now fills is hereby declared to
                                            be vacant.</p>
                                        <p>Resolved that he be paid his full salary to the close of
                                            the present session.</p>
                                        <p>Resolved that the Secretary notify him of this
                                        decision.</p>

                        Latin &amp; Greek, &amp; of <name key="pn000" reg="Wetmore, William R." type="person">W<hi rend="sup">m</hi> R. Wetmore</name> as Tutor from
                        &amp; after the present session were read &amp; accepted.</p>
                    <p>The Report of <name key="pn000" reg="Amis, James S." type="person">Jas. S. Amis
                            Esq</name> of <name key="name0000434" reg="Granville County, NC" type="place">Granville Co</name> on the escheat case of <name key="pn000" reg="Fane, Jacob" type="person">Jacob Fane</name> made at the request of
                        the <name key="name0000107" reg="Board of Trustees" type="organization">B<hi rend="sup">d</hi> of Trustees</name> in June last was presented
                        &amp; read &amp; laid on the table.</p>
