<p>You will oblige me very much by having the parcel sent you herewith, forwarded to my son, from whom I have not heard for more than three weeks. The <name key="name0001139" reg="Union army" type="organization" rend="yes">Yankees</name> have held possession of our <name key="name0000165" reg="Chapel Hill, NC" type="place" rend="yes">village</name> for fourteen days, and we see no indications of them moving. They have not on the whole behaved badly in the village where we have a safe guard, but in the country they have done badly, pillaging of every thing they could carry off. I have not heard of any cases of the loss of cattle, sheep or hogs — but the country is stripped of mules and horses. I cannot give you later news than you will have had from paroled soldiers from <name key="pn0000971" reg="Lee, Robert E." type="person" rend="yes">Lee</name> and <name key="pn0000850" reg="Johnston, Joseph E." type="person" rend="yes">Johnson's</name> Army. The Yankee dispatches announce the fall of <name key="name0003104" reg="Mobile, AL" type="place">Mobile</name> with capture of <name key="x" reg="x" type="person">Forrest</name> — and the capture of <name key="name0003103" reg="Macon, GA" type="place">Macon</name> and release of all prisoners at that place, and also of <name key="name0001020" reg="Salisbury, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Salisbury</name>, with prisoners and all the Quarter Masters stores sent from <name key="name0000934" reg="Raleigh, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Raleigh</name> so! that it is vain to disguise the fact of subjugation but that is preferable to having been Legislated into submission by the <name key="pn0000761" reg="Holden, William Woods" type="person" rend="yes">Holden</name> faction. by the bye, I hear it<pb id="unc09-23-p02" n="2"/>as coming from Gen. <name key="pn0000058" reg="Atkins, Smith Dykins" type="person">Atkins</name>, that <name key="pn0000761" reg="Holden, William Woods" type="person">Holden</name> is to be our Provincial Govr extending the lines over half of <name key="name0001063" reg="South Carolina" type="place">South Carolina</name> — the other portion of S.C. to be annexed to <name key="name0000415" reg="Georgia" type="place">Georgia</name>, thus obliterating the state lines of S.C. <name key="pn0000903" reg="Kilpatrick, Hugh Judson" type="person" rend="yes">Kilpatrick</name> was here yesterday and had a grand review, which I did not see. The Yankees are running the cars daily from <name key="name0003105" reg="Morehead City, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Morehead City</name> and probably from <name key="name0001238" reg="Wilmington, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Wilmington</name> to <name key="name0000300" reg="Durham, NC" type="place" rend="yes">Durham</name> and probably further up the road. They have a daily mail and forward any letters without inspection. I have a man and horse billeted upon me and if they continue to remain my supplies will be exhausted. They seem to dissuade negroes from going off. Nevertheless they go in large numbers.</p>
