                <p>Commencement Day! Three seniors! Gov <name key="pn0001702" reg="Vance, Zebulon Baird" type="person" rend="yes">Vance</name> is here
                    — delivered an admirable address on "The duties of
                    defeat." Bro. <name key="pn0001357" reg="Phillips, Charles" type="person" rend="yes">Charles</name> preached the Vale. sermon, said to
                    be a remarkably good one. A large crowd here many young ladies. Everything went
                    off well. <name key="pn0001702" reg="Vance, Zebulon Baird" type="person">Vance's</name> coming was a good thing. I hope it may be one of the helps to do
                    away the prejudice existing at present against the <name key="name0001146" reg="University of North Carolina" type="organization" rend="yes">University</name> &amp; the Faculty. </p>

                <p>Summer vacation! How much of listless ease &amp; vacuity of thought
                    &amp; action lies in those two words. Three weeks are gone before one knows
                    it — &amp; nothing done of the many things postponed to be done
                    at this time. We have had three or four long letters from <name key="pn0001361" reg="Phillips, Judith (née Vermeule)" type="person" rend="yes">Ma</name> — describing her visits in &amp; around <name key="name0000729" reg="New York" type="place" rend="yes">N.Y.</name> Kindly
                    received everywhere &amp; enjoying much.</p>
