Wilmington N. C.
Nov 11th 1861.
To the Hon. B'd of Trustees, Univ. N. C.
I have the honor to apply for a leave of absence for twelve months from the 21st of Sept. 1861.
Feeling it to be my duty to take part in our struggle for independence, if it
could be done without compromising my duty to the University;
and Prof Kimberly
having kindly consented to take my classes during my
absence; having been instructed moreover by the President Gov. Swain
, that upon consultation with such of the Trustees as he could see,
he found that they would approve the proceeding; I raised a company of
volunteers for twelve months & have since been in "the
service". I beg to submit this report of my course, & to ask
your endorsement of the same.
