		  <p>Your communication of the 15<hi rend="sup">th</hi> ult. to 
			 <name key="pn0000404" reg="Davis, Jefferson" type="person" rend="yes">President Davis</name>, through his Excellency 
			 <name key="pn0001702" reg="Vance, Zebulon Baird" type="person" rend="yes">Gov. Vance</name>, with report and resolutions of the 
			 <name reg="Board of Trustees" key="name0000107" type="organization" rend="yes">Board</name>, asking the exemption of students
			 in the two Senior Classes liable to conscription, was forwarded through this
			 Office to the 
			 <name type="organization" reg="War Department, Confederate States of America" key="name0003062" rend="yes">War Department</name>, with the following endorsement: — </p> 
		  <p>"Approved and respectfully forwarded, through the 
			 <name key="name0003017" reg="Confederate States of America, Bureau of Conscription" type="organization" rend="yes">Bureau of Conscription</name>, inviting attention to the endorsement
			 of His Excellency 
			 <name key="pn0001702" reg="Vance, Zebulon Baird" type="person">Gov.
				Vance</name>.</p> 
		  <p>"The Commandant is personally cognizant of the facts stated,
			 and earnestly recommends favorable consideration." </p> 
		  <p>The Communication was returned the 3<hi rend="sup">rd</hi> inst.,
			 with the following endorsement and instructions: —</p> 
		  <p>"Respectfully returned to 
			 <name key="pn0003125" reg="Mallett, Peter" type="person">Col.
				Mallett</name> for compliance with the order of the Sec. of War." </p> 
		  <p>I take pleasure in informing you orders have been issued from this
			 Office to 
			 <name key="pn0003115" reg="Landis, Augustus" type="person">Capt.
				Landis</name>, District Enrolling Officer, to ca<gap reason="torn page"/> out
			 the above instructions in granting exemption during the college course of the
			 members of the two senior classes.</p> 
		  <p>In performing this duty, 
			 <name reg="Swain, David Lowry" type="person" key="pn0001638" rend="yes">Governor</name>, I must express to you the great gratification and
			 interest felt in perusing the report, which will be filed at this Office with
			 pride as a North<pb id="unc09-59-p02" n="2"/>Carolinian, as a relic rather than
			 a public document. </p>
