* This Constitution, with a few alterations, is the same as that of the Young Men's Christian Association of the University of Virginia.

 PREAMBLE.

WE, the undersigned, desiring to promote Christian sympathy and brotherhood, and to advance the moral and religious welfare of the Students of this Institution, and of others around us, and impressed with the importance of united effort in accomplishing this object, have formed an Association, and hereby agree to adopt for our government the following Constitution and By-Laws:

 CONSTITUTION. ARTICLE 1.—Name and Object.

Section 1.—The name of this organization shall be the “YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA.”

Section 2.—The object of this Association shall be the improvement of the spiritual condition of the Students, and the extension of religious advantages to the destitute points in the neighborhood of the University.

 ARTICLE II.—Members.

Section 1.—The members of this Association shall be of two classes, viz: Active and Honorary.

Section 2.—Active Members. Any Student, or other person, of good moral character, may become an Active Member upon his election by a majority of the Executive Committee, by signing this Constitution, and upon the payment in advance, of one Dollar annually.

Active Members alone shall have the right to vote, and be eligible to office.

Section 3.—Honorary Members. Honorary Members may be constituted by a vote of two-thirds of the members present at any meeting.

Section 4.—The members of other Young Men's Christian Associations, while transiently among us, shall be entitled to the privileges of the Association.

 ARTICLE III.—Officers.

Section 1.—The Officers of this Association shall be a President, as many Vice Presidents as there are Christian denominations represented in the Association, a Recording and an Assistant Recording Secretary, a Corresponding Secretory, a Treasurer, a Librarian, and four Managers. These shall constitute the Executive Committee of the Association.

Section 2.—These officers shall be nominated and elected by ballot at the regular meetings of the Association in January and July, in all cases a majority of the votes cast shall be necessary to elect.

Section 3.—Vacancies in office may be filled by the Executive Committee until the next regular period of election.

 ARTICLE IV.—Duties of Officers.

Section 1.—President. It shall be the duty of the president to preside at all meetings of the Association and of the Executive Committee, and to preserve in strict exercise the rules of parliamentary usage, as laid down in Jefferson's Manual. It shall also be the duty of the President to present at the close of his term a report of the doings and progress of the Association.

Section 2.—Vice President. The Vice Presidents shall assist the President, when necessary, in preserving order, and in his absence, one of them shall preside.

Section 3.—Recording Secretary.—The duties of the Recording Secretary shall be to give notice of all meetings of the Association and of the Executive Committee, to attend said meetings, keep a correct record of proceedings thereat, and notify all Officers and Committees of their appointment. He shall, moreover, register the names, places of residence, and denomination of each member, also stating to which class of members he may belong.

Section 4.—Assistant Recording Secretary. The Assistant Recording Secretary shall aid the Recording Secretary in the discharge of his duties.

Section 5.—Corresponding Secretary. It shall be the duty of the Corresponding Secretary to conduct the correspondence of the Association, and to report at the end of his term.

Section 6.—Treasurer. The Treasurer shall collect all funds due the Association, and disburse the same; he shall keep a correct account of his transactions, and report to the Executive Committee, when so required, and to the Association at the close of his term.

Section 7.—Librarian. It shall be the duty of the Librarian to take charge of and keep in order all books, periodicals, papers, &c., belonging to the Association.

Section 8.—Executive Committee. The Executive Committee shall appoint from its own members Four Committees, one member of each being a Vice President of the Association, vix: 1st a Committee on Religious Meetings; 2d, a Committee on Rooms; 3d, a Committee on Lectures and Addresses; 4th a Committee on Finance.

Section 9.—Standing Committee. The Executive Committee shall also appoint a Standing Committee, consisting of at least three active members from each College Class and the Irregulars shall be counted a class. It shall be the duty of the Standing Committee to exert themselves to interest their respective Classes in the objects of the Association, to labor to induce all suitable young men to connect themselves with it, to endeavor to bring their fellow Students under moral and religious influences by securing their attendance at Prayer Meetings, Bible Classes, and other Religious Meetings, and also to take in charge all contributions for benevolent objects. This Committee shall report monthly.

 ARTICLE V.—Amendments.

This Constitution may be altered or amended by the concurrence of two thirds of the members voting at any monthly meeting, provided such alteration or amendment be proposed at a meeting held at least one month before.

 BY-LAWS. ARTICLE I.—Meetings.

Section 1.—The regular meetings of the Association shall be held on the evening of the third Tuesday in every month, and one fourth of the members shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business.

Section 2.—The April meeting shall be an Anniversary Meeting of the Association at which the Report of the President shall be read and an Address delivered by some gentleman invited for the purpose.

Section 3.—Special Meetings of the Association for the transaction of business may be called by the President, under the authority of the Executive Committee.

Section 4.—All meetings of the Association shall be opened and closed with appropriate religious exercises.

 ARTICLE II.—Order of Business.

The Order of business at meetings shall be as follows:

1. Call to order by the President. 2. Religious Exercises. 3. Reading the Minutes of last meeting; 4. Election of Officers, &c. 5. Reports of Committees, &c. 6. Unfinished Business. 7. New Business. 8. Reception of Communications and Miscellaneous Business. 9. Religious Exercises and Adjournment. ARTICLE III.—Committees.

Section 1.—The Executive Committee shall appoint from its own members Four Committees, in accordance with Art. iv, sec. 8, of the Constitution.

Section 2.—The Committee on Religious Meetings. It shall be the duty of the Committee on Religious Meetings to provide for the maintenance of Sabbath Schools and of meetings for religious instruction at destitute points in the neighborhood of the University.

Section 3.—Committee on Rooms. The Committee on Rooms shall procure proper places for the meetings of the Association, and make proper provision for lighting, warming, and keeping the same in order.

Section 4.—Committee on Lectures and Addresses. The Committee on Lectures and Addresses shall provide for the delivery of public Lectures and addresses, under the direction of the Executive Committee.

Section 5.—Committee on Finance. The Committe on Finance shall approve all accounts previous to their payment by the Treasurer, shall audit the Trersurer's account at the close of his term, and whenever said account be required.

Section 6.—Reports of Committees. All formal reports of Committees shall be made in writing, and in a shape suitable for filing; and all such Reports shall be carefully preserved by the Corresponding Secretary.

 ARTICLE IV. Amendments.

These By-Laws may be altered or amended at any regular meeting of the Association, provided the motion to alter or amend in no measure affect the Constitution.
