Description | Image shows a wooden sign that is titled "Peaks of Otter". The image was taken at the Sharp Top overlook, near milepost 92.6 in Section 1K of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Robert G. Bruce in August 1976. The sign reads: Peaks of Otter / The distinctive outline of Sharp Top (3875') has been a landmark since Indian times and was once believed to be Virginia's highest peak. A stone in the Washington Monument is inscribed "From Virginia's loftiest mountain, to Virginia's noblest son." Later surveys proved others higher, including neighboring Flat Top, elevation 4,001'. / United States Department of the Interior / National Park Service. |
