SAM HUNTINGTON, PRESIDENT, TO MAJOR GENERAL GATES.

Philadelphia, October 16, 1780.

Sir:

By the enclosed Copy of an Act of Congress of the 5. Instant, you will be informed that they have directed a Court of Enquiry respecting your Conduct as Commander of the Southern Army, and that another Officer should take the Command until such Enquiry be made.

At the same Time that the Duties of my Office oblige me to transmit you this Intelligence, It is my sincere Desire that the Result of such Enquiry may give Satisfaction to the Country and do Honor to your Character and Reputation.
