Sir:
I have had the honor to receive your Letter of the 9th July with a copy of an Act of Assembly of New Jersey enclosed, as also yours of the 25 of July respecting the accounts of this State, being under cover addressed to the Receiver of Continental Taxes, an Officer who hath not yet existence among us, as the Legislature made no provision for him, conceiving themselves unable to do anything in that business for the present. I did myself the honor to write to you the 22nd of June—in short, their reasons, for whom I mean not further to apologize, but shall urge on them the compliance with the Resolutions of Congress on this important subject at their earliest meeting on the first of November next at Hillsborough, when I shall again lay before them those Resolves and all your Letters respecting the same.
I shall endeavour to give you every information respecting our paper emissions and internal revenue as soon as I am furnished with the necessary documents. Your zeal in supporting the Continental Revenue, the main sinew of the Federal War, hath my highest approbation; and I am only sorry this State conceived herself unable to furnish her proportional aid at this time.
You have enclosed a Copy of the Acts of our General Assembly passed last Session and those of the preceeding, agreeably to your request.
