BRIG. GEN. SUMNER TO MAJOR HOGG.

January 29th, 1782.

Dear Sir:

I am to acquaint you, upon the complaint of Col. Hunter of Nash County, of one Scarborough seizing Henry Long as a delinquent was very wrong; that the said Long had not failed in his duty to the Country. I furloughed Long for six days; that a Court might be held over him and that Scarborough be present—the return of

Col. Hunter from the Court I enclose you; but as Scarborough was not present, I have discharged Henry Long, for twenty days, but should Scarborough require a further hearing, Long is to abide the Judgment by tryal, otherwise he is not discharged.
