About this Item
Title | Tunnel failure |
Date | 1953 |
Description | Photograph shows the entrance to a tunnel filled with dirt from the collapse of the mountain above it. Located near milepost 460 in section 2Y of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken in 1953. |
Commentary | This photo is testimony that the three tunnels that are part of section 2Y were not only difficult to build through solid rock and dirt in 1941-42, but that they necessitate serious maintenance and monitoring as their walls can collapse (here, a decade after their construction). This tunnel could be any of three that are located on Section 2Y: Lickstone Ridge, Bunches Bald, or Big Witch. |
