About this Item

Title Tunnel failure
Date 1953
Description Photograph shows the entrance to a tunnel filled with dirt from the collapse of the mountain above it. Located near milepost 460 in section 2Y of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken in 1953.
Commentary This photo is testimony that the three tunnels that are part of section 2Y were not only difficult to build through solid rock and dirt in 1941-42, but that they necessitate serious maintenance and monitoring as their walls can collapse (here, a decade after their construction). This tunnel could be any of three that are located on Section 2Y: Lickstone Ridge, Bunches Bald, or Big Witch.
