About this Item

Title Bypass dedication around Asheville
Date September 2, 1967
Description Ceremony for the opening of the Blue Ridge Parkway section around Asheville. Taken near the French Broad Bridge on September 2, 1967. Photographer unknown. "NO NEGATIVE, POLAROID PRINT"
Commentary The struggle to bring the parkway to the Asheville area was a lengthy political battle in the 1930s. Three decades later, this section of the parkway was finished and open to the public. Bringing the parkway to the Asheville area would also bring tourists to the city, which already featured many attractions. This road not only made the city more accessible, but served as a tourist route itself because of the scenery.
