About this Item
Title | Future Parkway Underpass Site at Aho Station |
Date | July 27, 1940 |
Description | Photograph shows buildings and a dirt path near an area marked "Future Parkway Underpass" near Aho Gap at mile post 288.1 in section 2F of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by A. S. Burns on July 27, 1940. |
Commentary | This picture is taken during the early phases of construction in section 2F -- there is a dirt path. A future underpass is marked on the picture so the picture was probably used for planning purposes. It is important to notice the houses that are close to the development. The government's taking of peoples' homes was a large source of controversy and expense for the Blue Ridge Parkway project. Residents whose property fell within the right-of-way either were forced to relocate or sell their lands to the state, with the state determining what price their land was worth. |
