About this Item
Title | Tunnel No. 1 West Portal |
Date | April 28, 1943 |
Description | Photograph shows rock cut just outside the west portal of tunnel #1 near mile post 333.6 in section 2L of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by Ted Pease on April 28, 1943. |
Commentary | The west portal into tunnel number one gives a greater example of how the road was carved into the landscape. Further, the manner in which the rock walls were kept most likely aided in creating a scenic motorway feel to the drive, even though it wasn't a naturally formed rock wall. |
