Commentary | Scenic view of Hare Mill Pond, road, and automobile on Blue Ridge Parkway. Hare Mill Pond is located at mile 225.2 in Alleghany County, NC. Picture taken on August 22, 1936 by W.D. Stanton. Picture from the North Carolina State Archives. In 1936, the Blue Ridge Parkway gained legislative authorization (becoming legal), making Hare Mill Pond and the roads around it part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Although the Parkway was built through some beautiful glades, forests, and hills, the designers of the road tried to ensure that the final result of the Parkway created a pleasing view that complemented the surrounding nature. Landscaping surrounding the road softened curves, mirrored the lines of the land, and attempted to enhance the view as much as possible. Picture labeled "Same back over left side of road. Hare Mill Pond." |
