Commentary | Picture taken August 24, 1936 by W.D. Stanton. Picture from the North Carolina State Archives. The construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway faced challenges when planning to build through nature. Eventually, the roadsides, slopes, and earth piles that were the results of construction were smoothed, shaped, and landscaped to enhance visual appeal and diminish 'objectionable effects.'
