Title Handlaid rock embankment

Description A cross-section view of a rock embankment with a man at the top to provide scale. The embankment was hand-laid using large slabs of rock stacked on top of each other. This feature of the Parkway's construction is intended to protect the road from the erosion of of the steep slope below. Photo taken by "LMH" at Milepost 263 on August 14, 1936.
Commentary The photograph was taken five months after work on the section began. This section (2E) was one of the first completed.
