About this Item
Title | Bluff Park Bridle Trail, looking toward Bluff |
Title Note | Bluff Park |
Date | January 5, 1936 |
Description | Photograph shows a horse trail in Bluff Park (now Doughton Park) near mile post 240 in section 2C of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Taken by R. G. H. on January 5, 1936. |
Commentary | In the early days of planning, staff expected considerable use by equestrians, but this proved to be only a minor attraction. In the late 1940s, rangers still kept three trails cleared for use by horses, in addition to Grassy Gap Road. Use of most of the park trails by horses ended in the 1970s; today they are allowed only on the Grassy Gap Road. |
